Our body’s arteries and veins carry blood throughout our bodies and allow the exchange of oxygen, nutrients, and waste. Veins carry blood back to the heart and have one-way valves to keep the blood from flowing the opposite direction. When these valves weaken or become damaged, blood can pool inside the vein and cause spider veins, which can look unsightly and cause varying amounts of discomfort. This is very common in both men and women. Risk factors for developing spider veins include gender, age, hormonal changes, familial history, lack of movement, obesity, injuries, and sun damage.
There are several ways to treat leg veins, including:
Side effects of the treatments are mild and temporary. Side effects can include mild cramping, bruising, itching, or swelling at the procedure site. After the treatment, compression stockings are recommended for a minimum of three days post-procedure. Strenuous exercise, alcohol, and aspirin (and other blood thinners) should be avoided 48 hours before and after the procedure.
