Excessive Sweating

Want to stop telegraphing your nerves on that special date? Want to present your breakthrough idea to your boss without showing wet marks? At Kalia Dermatology and Laser Center in Los Gatos, California, our physicians can offer a variety of prescription treatments to all of our patients from the San Francisco Bay Area.

What is Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating which can occur on the hands, back, under arms, groin, feet, and under the breasts. Your sweat glands are connected to your nervous systems, and are activated when your body temperature rises, or you experience nervousness or stress. With Hyperhidrosis, your body is producing sweat without being activated by your nervous system, and can be made even worse with nervousness or stress.

How is Hyperhidrosis Treated?

There are a variety of treatments that can help to address excessive sweating, ranging from topical medications to more permanent solutions. Our board certified dermatologists will assess the level of the condition and be able to offer many options for topical medications that can alleviate the symptoms of Hyperhidrosis. Many patients have great results with topical medications, but only experience results with daily application. For long term results, that don’t require the daily application of medication, Kalia offers solutions such as Botox injections.

Botox for Hyperhidrosis

You may have heard of Botox being injected into the forehead to prevent wrinkles. While this is a common use for Botox, it can also help to prevent excessive sweating when injected into the underarm areas. Botox works by preventing the secretion of a chemical that activates your sweat glands. The temporary paralysis of your sweat glands in the underarms can last between six and twelve months. While this treatment does not permanently destroy the sweat gland, it can provide longer results than the topical applications of prescriptions.

Do I Need Underarm Sweat Glands?

No. You have approximately two million sweat glands throughout your body, and your underarms only contain about 2% of those glands. Thanks to the amazing and adaptable human body, the loss of the sweat from the underarms will be evenly spread out to the rest of the body and you will continue to perspire normally.
